Cold and Flu Tips for Moms and the Kids they Love

Cold and Flu season is upon us and it will be one of the most trying times in family life....when the little ones get sick. Here are a few tips to ease the stress and get the family back to the picture of health.

1. Remember that cold symptoms and flu symptoms can be similar but with a cold the fever is lower and doesn’t last for more than a day or two., maybe three. Flu symptoms can be more severe with the addition of body aches, coughing, high fever, headache and no appetite and can last for a week or more.

2. Kids need fluids during either illness and that can be in the form of juices, water, popsicles, and soup. The milk they usually drink may make the oral secretions thicker so check with your physician. Toddlers and older children can go a day or two without the milk products especially if they are coughing and congested. Infants may take Pedialyte for a few feedings.  Clear liquids help to loosen the secretions so kids can breathe easier and don’t get so choked when coughing. Ask your doctor how to handle fluid intake when your infant is sick.

3. Washing hands is the single easiest way to help prevent the spread of the flu and cold symptoms. Teaching kids to cover their mouth and nose when sneezing is great. Have them cough or sneeze into their elbow to stop the germs from flying everywhere. Hand sanitizer is the next best thing to soap and water so always keep some on hand.

4. Rest is essential. If kids have a fever, keep them home from school or daycare. It is sometimes hard to get older kids to stay home or avoid sports practice, but one day of rest does the body good. Naps and early bedtimes help if outside activity can’t be avoided.

5. Consider getting the flu shot for everyone in your home. Check with your physician about his or her recommendations. And give yourself permission to avoid large crowds or over booking your family for activities during the holiday season. Being around large crowds when you are run down will increase you and your child’s chances of coming down with an illness. Enjoy a family day at home to rejuvenate and renew.

6. Eat fresh fruits and veggies to help get the vitamins you need to stay healthy or t0 recover from the viruses that are lurking about. Stay hydrated over the fall and winter months too.

Following these tips won’t promise a winter without illness but they can give you a hands up on the recovery. Blessings to all for a healthy fall and winter, but just in case, keep the tissues handy.
