About the Book:
Ten-year-old Andy Smithson is magically brought to the Land of Oomaldee while he is doing dishes one night. Unbeknownst to him, he is there to break a 500-year-old curse.  Andy learns that his quest is the Dragon’s Lair to find an ingredient critical to breaking the curse - the scale from an elusive red dragon, the fiercest of all dragon species. Andy nearly destroys the castle amidst adventures battling fire-breathing dragons, fighting vicious vulture attacks, escaping people-eating giants and more.

Overall Thoughts:
L.R.W. Lee has a good imagination and descriptive ability. By the end of chapter one I was hooked and wanted to continue, finding it hard to put the book down as the hours ticked by. The chapters are driven forward by the ‘goal’ of finding the scales. You see good character growth, especially in the main character Andy Smithson. I did feel some parts were a bit heavy handed with a lesson and felt it would have been better if Lee let the reader discover the lesson from the story instead of sending in a mentor to explain things. Another thing that stood out to me was Mermin's lisp. I found it a bit distracting and hard to read.

As I approached the end of the book, I was wondering how the author was going to tie up all the loose ends and questions that had not been answered with only a single chapter left. I will state not all the answers are given, but this is a series and so I'm sure those few questions will be answered in the future books of this series.

Again I applaud L.R.W. Lee's imagination in creating so many interesting parts to the world of Oomaldee. The key, the sword, the talking statues all of these things are entertaining and work well in a hero’s journey. Lee makes use of these things to achieve the character’s goals. They work well.
