Forced into a life at sea by the Royal Navy Press Gangs, 12-year-old Tommy Kitt finds himself in a floating sea of misery. Poor living conditions and beatings occur daily. Despite his small size, Tommy must summon the courage and physical ability to prevail in a situation he cannot escape.

Overall Thoughts:
We like the overall historical value of this book. Written for an older reader (ages 9 and 12) this isn't your normal picture book to sit down with your toddler or yearly elementary student. However, if you are looking for deep connections with the characters, this isn't that type of book. The author only has 22 pages to unfold the tale of life for a young boy on a Royal Navy ship after being ripped from his family. We feel McDine did a wonderful job showing as much detail and sharing graphic information of this hard life. You walk away as a reader with deep empathy for these boys and hopefully like us, a desire to read more about this period of time in history.
