Author Interview with Iain Reading of a new young adult series...

Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold is the thrilling first installment in a new young adult series of adventure mystery stories by Iain ReadingThis first book of the Kitty Hawk Flying Detective Agency Series introduces Kitty Hawk, an intrepid teenage pilot with her own De Havilland Beaver seaplane and a nose for mystery and intrigue. A cross between Amelia Earhart, Nancy Drew and Pippi Longstocking, Kitty is a quirky young heroine with boundless curiosity and a knack for getting herself into all kinds of precarious situations.
Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold follows the events of a very exciting summer for the daring teenaged seaplane pilot, Kitty Hawk.  After taking it upon herself to conduct whale research in Alaska over the summer Kitty's curiosity gets the best of her and she finds herself caught up in an amazing adventure with some gold thieves and the cursed gold that they are trying to escape with to Canada.

Not to give too much away, of course, but Kitty is swept along on quite an adventure across a beautiful and rugged landscape that has a dark history of its own.

Can you tell us about your publisher and how the process worked in getting published?

I am kind of a do-it-yourself kind of person so I just took that and applied it to the publishing of my books as well and self-published them.

How did you get the idea for this book?

The idea for the main character was the first thing that came to me.  Once I had established that, an intrepid young teenaged seaplane pilot named Kitty Hawk who would ultimately be driven to try and fly around the world, the rest of it just seemed to write itself somehow.

What is a typical writing day like for you?

I suppose it starts off with a walk through deserted streets to sort of get my head together and figure out what I want to accomplish with the immediate chapters I want to write and where everything is going.  Once I have that the next step is to find some quiet isolation and then put all of that down on paper, discovering all the twists and turns I hadn't anticipated as I go along.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

The thing I enjoy the most is creating these amazing and fantastic worlds that the characters inhabit and breathing life into them.  It's like taking daydreaming a step further and living vicariously through your own fictional characters because they can do everything and anything that you yourself ever dreamed of doing.

What is the most difficult part of writing?

The most difficult thing is often the struggle to find the "voice" of a particular character or of an entire book.  Once you find that, I think it's much easier going.

How has publishing a book changed your life?

Publishing a book has made me keen to write even more books and keep the fantastical fiction worlds alive and see what becomes of everyone in them.

What are your plans now?

Right now my plans are to try and bring another different world to life in another series of books before returning to the Kitty Hawk Flying Detective Agency Series and continuing on with that.

What is your best tip for aspiring authors?

As an aspiring author myself I think the best tip I could possibly give would be to say "just do it".  Just write something, put it together and make a book out of it.  Don't try and write the book you wish you could write but are incapable of writing.  Just write the books that you CAN write, in the way you can best write them.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readership? (Here you can share about characters, historical facts, setting or whatever else you would like our readers to know about your book.)

I am a big fan of exploring the world, whether by means of "getting out there" and seeing it or by reading about it from the comfort of my own bed, so I guess I wanted my Kitty Hawk books to reflect just a little bit of that spirit of vicarious adventure.  And I hope people will like it.
